Kolkata, March 9 (NationPress) Trinamool Congress's All India General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee publicly accused the BJP-led central government on Monday of orchestrating a larger plot that could result in the freezing of bank accounts belonging to voters whose names have been removed from the electoral rolls.

During a speech to party supporters at the protest site of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee claimed he had received information from a Delhi official regarding this alleged scheme.

“The funds in the accounts of the underprivileged will be misappropriated by BJP officials. If your name is later omitted from the voter list and you attempt to update your bank account, you'll be required to present your KYC and voter identification. Should you fail to provide the voter card, your bank account will be frozen by the Centre and the money will be seized. This is their scheme,” he asserted.

Banerjee also expressed concerns regarding the status of nearly 60 lakh voters currently listed as being under “ad-judication” in the final voter list.

He indicated that around 80 percent of these voters had been “mapped,” suggesting that a family member was included in the 2002 voter list.

He questioned why their names remained under adjudication despite these facts and declared that the issue would be escalated to the Supreme Court.

Reflecting on the 2021 state Assembly elections, which took place over eight phases, Banerjee noted that several political parties had requested a reduction in the number of polling phases this time.

He criticized the BJP, stating, “Regardless of how many rounds of voting you conduct, each will be conducted peacefully. We previously held the last election democratically as well. This time, no matter the number of voting rounds, the populace will respond democratically.”

The Trinamool Congress leader further took aim at Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

“Amit Shah claimed that if Mamata Banerjee returns to power, I will govern the state. He must be hesitant to mention my name. I challenge him from this platform. You argue that Trinamool is a dynastic party. I propose, introduce a bill in Parliament stating that only one individual from a family can engage in politics. I will exit politics if that bill passes. If you possess the authority, accept the challenge,” Banerjee stated.

Point of View

If substantiated, could indicate serious threats to voter rights and democratic processes, warranting close scrutiny from both the public and legal institutions.
