Kolkata, June 30 (NationPress) A team of four members from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fact-finding committee, established to investigate the alleged shortcomings in the Kolkata gang-rape case and to examine the situation on the ground, arrived in the city on Monday.
This team comprises former Union Ministers Meenakshi Lekhi, Satpal Singh, along with MPs Biplab Deb and Manan Kumar Mishra.
The committee will scrutinize the supposed security failures at the South Calcutta Law College where this horrific incident occurred, while also evaluating the broader law and order scenario in the state, especially regarding women's safety.
On June 25, a law student was reportedly gang-raped within the premises of the South Calcutta Law College located in the Kasba area of Kolkata, causing national outrage. It is alleged that the perpetrators have connections to the ruling Trinamool Congress.
In the coming days, the committee will tour the college grounds where the crime took place and engage with the college officials to review security protocols. They will also consult with the police force handling the investigation and meet with the victim's family.
In an interview with IANS, Satpal Singh expressed the national dismay over the escalating violence against women in West Bengal. He criticized the Mamata Banerjee administration for its inability to uphold women's dignity within the state and voiced concern over remarks made by Trinamool leaders regarding the rape case.
He emphasized the importance of the Mamata government granting them access to the victim's family, warning that any refusal would demonstrate a dictatorial stance.
Meenakshi Lekhi indicated that they have requested discussions with the Police Commissioner, Chief Secretary, and college administrators.
She mentioned that the committee would hold a press conference later today to disclose further insights from their findings.
It is noteworthy that the committee has been assigned to investigate the incident and prepare a report for BJP President J.P. Nadda.
The BJP has been vociferous in its criticism of the West Bengal government concerning the law college rape case and has called for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in light of the increasing violence against women.
