Kolkata, Oct 11 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) administration on Saturday for exploiting the recent rape case involving a woman college student in Odisha, which came to light following the gang rape of a second-year medical student near a private medical college in Durgapur, located in the West Burdwan district of West Bengal.
In response to the BJP's harsh political criticisms regarding the Durgapur incident, Shashi Panja, the Minister for Women and Child Welfare in West Bengal, pointed out that a similar incident had occurred in Odisha, where the BJP governs. She stated, "The student in Odisha had set herself ablaze. Questions should not arise from a singular event. If inquiries are to be made, they should encompass similar occurrences nationwide. Such events are tragic and unacceptable, no matter where they occur," Panja remarked.
She asserted that the West Bengal Police promptly initiated an investigation once the incident was reported.
"The victim's family has arrived in Durgapur from Odisha and has shown confidence in the police investigation. The BJP is unnecessarily politicizing this matter. Engaging in politics around sexual violence against women is never appropriate," Panja emphasized.
In response to Panja's remarks regarding the rape case in West Bengal, BJP legislator Agnimitra Paul declared that whether it is the rape and murder incident from last August at Kolkata's R.G Kar Medical College and Hospital or the recent Durgapur case, crimes against women, particularly female doctors, have become widespread in the state.
"The perpetrators are well aware that leaders from the ruling Trinamool Congress are there to shield them. The law and order situation in West Bengal has entirely deteriorated. No woman in this state is secure anymore," Paul stated.
Earlier on Saturday, the Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, suggested that West Bengal should adopt the decisive approach of Uttar Pradesh in dealing with rape offenders.
"The accused should not be held in custody for extended periods. They should face swift consequences. Encounters should be executed immediately after arresting individuals charged with severe crimes like rape," Adhikari added.
