Kolkata, June 28 (NationPress) A political uproar has emerged in West Bengal following allegations made by a woman against Padma Shree awardee monk Kartik Maharaj, affiliated with the Murshidabad unit of Bharat Sevashram Sangha, accusing him of committing rape on 12 occasions over a span of six months in 2013.
According to the police report filed by the woman, Kartik Maharaj allegedly assaulted her repeatedly 12 years ago, with promises of securing her a job at a nearby school.
The timing of this complaint is particularly significant, coinciding with a major outcry in the state regarding the recent rape of a law student on the premises of her college in Kasba, South Kolkata, on the evening of June 25.
The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) is emphasizing this issue, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of remaining silent, especially since the accused monk reportedly had close ties with the saffron party.
Furthermore, the parents of a woman, a junior doctor from the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, who was raped and murdered within the hospital last August, have voiced their concerns, stating that politically powerful individuals in the state might attempt to protect the accused in the Kasba rape case.
TMC General Secretary Kunal Ghosh criticized the parents of the R.G. Kar victim for their perceived political bias, urging them to express their views regarding the allegations against Kartik Maharaj, who has denied all accusations.
The woman, who alleges she was raped by Kartik Maharaj 12 times between January and June 2013, also claims that he threatened to take his own life if she reported the incidents to law enforcement.
The district police in Murshidabad have initiated an investigation following the filing of the case.
The West Bengal BJP has also questioned the timing of the allegations, highlighting that the complaint comes 12 years after the alleged incidents and at a moment when the ruling TMC is under scrutiny for the Kasba law college rape case.
