Kolkata, Oct 25 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress expressed strong discontent towards the BJP on Saturday due to its apparent lack of response and calculated silence regarding the suicide of a woman doctor in Maharashtra, who took her life following repeated sexual assaults by police Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne and intimidation from a state MP.
State minister Shashi Panja questioned whether the BJP had become so emotionally desensitized that its leaders opt to overlook such a grave situation occurring in a state governed by their own party and its affiliates.
During a press conference in Kolkata, the senior Trinamool representative highlighted the shocking 'lack' of national outcry regarding this distressing incident.
"We were aware of the BJP's political bankruptcy up to this point. But has the party now entered a phase of emotional bankruptcy as well? They have not spoken out on the tragic event in Satara. Why is there no media coverage? Where are the national news outlets? If this had occurred in West Bengal, there would have been widespread chaos, with members of the women's commission and human rights commission rushing to the area," stated the Trinamool leader.
The heartbreaking event transpired when the doctor, who worked at a government hospital in Satara district of Maharashtra, allegedly took her own life in a hotel room. A note found on her palm alongside a four-page suicide letter implicated Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne in repeated sexual assaults. Authorities reported the arrest of one individual named in the suicide note from Pune.
In a police complaint, the woman alleged harassment from an MP who pressured her to fabricate medical reports for individuals implicated in police cases without proper examinations. She also emphasized the police's inaction despite her multiple complaints about the sexual assaults by Gopal Badne.
Criticizing the National Commission for Women (NCW) and other national organizations, Panja remarked, "Where are these agencies and the advocates for justice? Do they only appear in BJP-ruled states with a double-engine government? Or are such concerns reserved solely for West Bengal? This reveals the BJP's inconsistent approach to addressing crimes against women, showing their selective response to these matters," said Panja, who holds the position of the state's Women, Child Development and Social Welfare Minister (Independent charge).
