Kolkata, Oct 14 (NationPress) The BJP has raised concerns regarding the uncharacteristic silence of various women leaders from the Trinamool Congress concerning the recent gang-rape incident in Durgapur, especially when they are usually vocal about issues in BJP-governed states.
Through a social media update, the West Bengal BJP questioned why Trinamool Congress MPs Mahua Moitra, Saayoni Ghosh, Sagarika Ghose, and state minister Shashi Panja have not spoken out following this serious incident.
In comments to IANS, BJP leader and spokesperson Shatorupa stated, "These women leaders often voice their opinions when crimes occur in BJP-led states. However, they are conspicuously quiet regarding the gang-rape of a medical student from Odisha who came to West Bengal for her studies. We demand to understand their selective silence on crucial issues like this one."
The victim, a second-year medical student from Odisha, was gang-raped by five individuals in a forest area near a private medical college in the Durgapur region of West Burdwan district last Friday. Following the victim's report, the police have apprehended all five suspects involved in the case.
This incident has sparked significant political discourse in the state, with the BJP using it as an opportunity to criticize the Mamata Banerjee administration for its failure to ensure women's safety.
BJP representatives have also condemned Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's remarks suggesting that women should refrain from going out at night following the incident.
Shatorupa further remarked that whenever a crime of such severity occurs in other states, party leaders typically express their opposition.
"Yet, in Bengal, these so-called leaders from the Trinamool Congress have opted to remain silent and have failed to issue any statement condemning the incident. Their silence indicates a clear lack of safety and security for women in Bengal," the spokesperson concluded.
