Kolkata, Oct 13 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, made serious allegations on Monday, claiming that the father of one of the suspects in the Durgapur gang-rape case is affiliated with the Trinamool Congress.
Adhikari, who staged a dharna in Durgapur after police denied him the opportunity to hold a public meeting, criticized the Mamata Banerjee administration for suppressing their protests through police action.
While speaking to the press, Adhikari stated, "One of the arrested individuals works for the Durgapur Municipal Corporation. We have learned that his father is connected to the Trinamool. Hence, there exists a Trinamool connection in this incident. The principal suspect remains at large. The rule of law has collapsed in Bengal."
On Sunday, the Durgapur Township police apprehended three individuals in relation to the gang-rape of a medical student. Later that evening, another suspect, named Sheikh Nasiruddin, was taken into custody. Adhikari alleged that the father of the fourth arrested individual also has ties to the Trinamool Congress.
Furthermore, Adhikari claimed he was informed that medical staff had been instructed not to engage with him or any visitors regarding the victim's condition.
"I spoke with her family. She is currently stable. Her parents wish to transfer her to AIIMS Bhubaneswar as soon as possible. This morning, around 8 a.m., I received a message from one of our party members indicating that management had directed doctors not to meet with me or any other leaders from my party. This order must have originated from either the police or the Trinamool Congress," he remarked.
Subsequently, police refused the BJP's request to set up a stage and conduct a protest near the Durgapur city center. In response, Adhikari initiated a dharna, accusing the police of prioritizing stopping the BJP rather than capturing the main suspect.
"The police need to recognize that they also have daughters and wives at home. What are they doing to ensure their safety? The police must operate with impartiality. However, they seem more focused on obstructing the BJP," Adhikari commented.
He urged his party workers and supporters to persist with the dharna and challenged the Mamata Banerjee government to intervene.
Meanwhile, members of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) protested outside the private medical college, demanding justice for the victim.
