Sandeshkhali Gang-Rape Incident: Victim Appeals to Calcutta HC, Claims Police Inaction

Kolkata, Jan 7 (NationPress) A woman from Sandeshkhali in West Bengal has filed a plea with the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, claiming that the local police have shown negligence in their investigation regarding her complaint of gang-rape against three individuals, one of whom is a local Trinamool Congress leader.

She stated that the incident occurred in May of the previous year, and she, along with her family, reached out to the local police to take action.

Initially, she reported that the police refused to file an FIR regarding the incident. However, due to pressure from the community, the police eventually registered the case a few days later.

Now, the victim alleges that the law enforcement officials have not made any progress in the investigation for many months.

Additionally, she and her family are reportedly facing pressure from the accused and their associates to retract the complaint at the local police station.

One of the three accused is Dilip Mondal, the block president of the Trinamool Congress in Sandeshkhali. The Calcutta High Court has accepted the victim's petition, and the case is scheduled for a hearing on Wednesday.

On December 30, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Sandeshkhali after previously refraining from engaging with the community during the crisis earlier this year, which included allegations of sexual harassment against local women and land grabbing by Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan.

During a public address at Sandeshkhali, the Chief Minister suggested that local movements earlier in the year were influenced by a “money game”.

On the same day, opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari held a protest in Sandeshkhali, despite police denying last-minute permission, and drew a comparison between Mamata Banerjee and the caretaker government leader in neighboring Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus.
