The Maharashtra government's General Administration Department on Wednesday, 12 August released the official list of ministers and dignitaries assigned to lead flag-hoisting ceremonies across all 36 districts for the 80th Independence Day on 15 August. The circular designates a senior minister or official for each district headquarters, with contingency provisions if a minister is unable to attend.

Principal Ceremonies

Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma will conduct the principal ceremonial flag hoisting in Pune. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will hoist the flag at Mantralaya, the state administrative headquarters in Mumbai. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is assigned to Thane, while Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar will lead the ceremony in Beed.

Contingency Provisions

According to the circular, if a Guardian Minister or Cabinet Minister is unable to attend due to unavoidable circumstances, the Divisional Commissioner will lead the ceremony at divisional headquarters, while the District Collector will hoist the flag at the district level.

Chhagan Bhujbal's Absence and the Raigad Subplot

Notably, veteran Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal does not appear anywhere on the list — an absence that has drawn attention given his seniority within the MahaYuti coalition government.

The assignment of Bharat Gogawale of Shiv Sena to lead the Raigad ceremony has added a layer of political intrigue. The district's Guardian Minister post remains contested within the MahaYuti alliance: while Aditi Tatkare of the NCP currently holds the Guardian Minister portfolio for Raigad, Gogawale has actively sought the position. His designation for the Independence Day ceremony prompted speculation about a possible shift in the portfolio. Officials, however, clarified that the list pertains strictly to ceremonial arrangements for 15 August and that no formal notification regarding any change to the Guardian Minister post has been issued.

The political undercurrents around Raigad reflect broader tensions within the MahaYuti alliance over district-level power-sharing — a recurring friction point that the ceremonial calendar has inadvertently brought back into focus.
