Belagavi (Karnataka), Dec 9 (NationPress) — The Karnataka Police took action by detaining several BJP leaders and farmers who attempted to surround the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi on Tuesday.
Following a significant demonstration at Malini City Grounds in Belagavi, where they condemned the "farmer-unfriendly policies" of the "corrupt Congress government", BJP representatives alongside farmers moved towards the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha to initiate a siege.
The police intervened and detained the group en route to the assembly.
Among those detained were State BJP President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra, Opposition Leader in the Assembly R. Ashoka, the Opposition Leader in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, Chief Whip N. Ravikumar, BJP MLC C.T. Ravi, State BJP General Secretary P. Rajeev, along with other BJP MLAs, MLCs, and party leaders.
During the protest at Malini City Grounds, Vijayendra criticized the Congress administration, stating that the only notable outcome of their governance over the last two and a half years has been the tragic suicide of 2,500 farmers.
He accused the Congress-led government of enforcing "farmer-unfriendly policies" and warned that this "anti-farmer" regime would not endure much longer.
Vijayendra questioned whether the state government has adequately addressed the distress faced by farmers, pointing to issues affecting those cultivating paddy, sugarcane, cotton, maize, and more.
He alleged that during recent heavy rains, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah failed to visit the affected areas and opted for an aerial survey instead.
Vijayendra urged citizens to recognize the Congress government's detrimental policies toward farmers, emphasizing that the government has the power to provide a Minimum Support Price (MSP) exceeding the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP), questioning why this has not been done.
He labeled the Congress-led government as a "disgrace" and demanded the Assembly address the pressing issues of northern Karnataka and farmers' hardships.
Referencing former CM B.S. Yediyurappa’s consistent support for farmers, he stated, "As Yediyurappa's son and the State BJP President, I will always stand by farmers."
He affirmed that farmers will persist in their protests until justice is achieved.
R. Ashoka, the Opposition Leader in the Assembly, expressed that farmers' voices must resonate within both the Suvarna Soudha and the Vidhana Soudha.
He added that BJP's protests would continue within the Assembly as well, criticizing the Congress government by asserting, "There is no government in Karnataka; it is non-functional."
Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, the Opposition Leader in the Legislative Council, highlighted the severe rainfall across various regions leading to substantial crop losses.
"Cotton, tur, urad — everything has been destroyed. The state government should have heard farmers' grievances and addressed them. However, this 'anti-farmer' government is acting predictably," he commented.
He recalled that the BJP had dispatched teams to assess conditions in diverse regions of the state.
N. Ravikumar, Chief Whip in the Legislative Council, asserted that the Siddaramaiah-led government must confront farmers' issues; otherwise, they should resign.
BJP MLC C.T. Ravi voiced concern that Karnataka now ranks second nationally in farmer suicides, calling for immediate actions to alleviate farmers' distress.
