New Delhi, Feb 12 (NationPress) The Rouse Avenue Court in the city has convicted former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar for his involvement in the 1984 Anti-Sikh riots, eliciting varied reactions, particularly from BJP officials. Numerous BJP leaders expressed their approval of the judgment while accusing the Congress party of protecting those accountable for the tragedy over the years.
BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa referred to the conviction as a crucial, albeit overdue, advancement towards justice.
"The court has now held Sajjan Kumar accountable in yet another case linked to the 1984 Sikh massacre. The evidence confirmed his involvement in the killing of Jaswant Singh, as stated in the 1991 FIR at the Saraswati Vihar police station," he stated.
He blamed the Congress for the horrific violence against Sikhs, accusing its leaders of igniting fires against the community.
"The grievous actions of 1984 are gradually being exposed. The Congress has consistently shielded Sajjan Kumar and others responsible, but truth has ultimately emerged victorious," he added.
Sirsa also acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi for reopening investigations into the 1984 anti-Sikh violence through the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT).
"I extend my gratitude to PM Modi for ensuring these offenders are brought to justice. We anticipate that the court will impose either the death penalty or life imprisonment on him," he concluded.
BJP National Secretary Tarun Chugh celebrated the conviction as a landmark event for the Sikh community.
"This day holds significant importance for Punjabis and Sikhs. The principal architect of the 1984 Sikh genocide, Sajjan Kumar, has been convicted. Although justice came 40 years too late, it has finally been achieved," he remarked.
He criticized Congress for safeguarding the perpetrators instead of delivering justice.
"Congress manipulated voter lists to target Sikh residences and punish them. Former PM Rajiv Gandhi rationalized it by stating, ‘When a big tree falls, the earth shakes,’" Chugh highlighted.
Chugh also commended PM Modi for fostering justice, compensation, and job prospects for Sikhs since 2014.
Currently, Sajjan Kumar is serving life imprisonment for another anti-Sikh riots case. This new conviction intensifies his legal troubles.
