Bengaluru, March 19 (NationPress) The BJP unit in Karnataka has criticized the Congress-led administration for placing police officers in a vulnerable position within the state. The BJP accused the government of not being a 'police-friendly government' but rather a 'rioters-friendly government' operating in Karnataka.
BJP MLA and State BJP General Secretary, V. Sunil Kumar, voiced these concerns in the Assembly while citing the provisions of 'Rule 69'.
"The series of events in the state raises doubts about whether the Home Department is functioning effectively or if it is dysfunctional. Is the State Home Minister aware of the situation? Is the police force inadequate? Have criminal elements gained the upper hand over law enforcement, or is there a collaboration between them?" questioned MLA Sunil Kumar.
In the incident involving an attack on the Udayagiri police station in Mysuru over a controversial social media post, the police were slow to make arrests. Rioters hurled stones at police vehicles, attempted to set fires, and exhibited extreme behavior. Referring to the DJ Halli-KG Halli and Hubballi police station incidents, the BJP leader noted that these were triggered by a social media post perceived to insult the religious sentiments of a particular community. He warned that if such developments continue to be overlooked, there could be daily unrest in the state as Hindu deities are frequently targeted.
"It is evident that one faction in society is overstepping boundaries while the state government remains indifferent. Stricter measures are enforced in other regions when crimes against women and society occur. In Karnataka, police are assaulted and left powerless," he added.
"The state administration appears to be on friendly terms with criminals and rioters. The police are handcuffed in their fight against crime. This is unprecedented in Karnataka," Sunil Kumar expressed, while criticizing the Congress-led government.
"If police are attacked, and the government does not empower them to handle the situation, what does that say about police morale? If Hindus unite in large numbers, there will be no law and order issues, but if Muslims gather similarly, violence ensues," he remarked.
"Have the police in the state become friendly with criminals? The government has distanced itself from the investigation into the gang rape of an Israeli tourist at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hampi. This incident has tarnished the state's reputation for safety, especially for international visitors. How could the state fail to ensure security at such a significant location? This is concerning," Sunil Kumar criticized the Congress government.
"The state government hastily labeled the suspect in the case of a cow's udders being slashed as insane and dismissed the matter within two days. The expectations that the government would respect the sentiments of Hindus who revere cows have been dashed," the BJP leader said.
"Online fraud has infiltrated rural areas in Karnataka. The police have utterly failed in their duties, as evidenced by cases such as a student who lost his tuition fees to online scams, leading to tragic outcomes. Another individual lost his job savings, resulting in a similar fate. The government must recognize this as a societal issue and take decisive action," he urged.
State Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister, Priyank Kharge, refuted the allegations against the Congress government, asserting that BJP leaders continuously raise Hindu-Muslim issues.
"How can you accuse the government? What about the case of Hindu activist Paresh Mesta? The investigation was handed to the CBI, which found no foul play in his death," Kharge questioned.
MLA Sunil Kumar also noted that in Bengaluru, anti-social elements are seen riding motorcycles brandishing swords and other weapons.
"Do these criminals fear the police at all? The state government must stop shielding criminals and restore peace," he concluded.
