Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Jan 31 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party’s recent decision to appoint campaign managers for the forthcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections has clearly indicated the constituencies that the party is eager to contest in alliance with the AIADMK.
While both the BJP and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam have stated that formal seat-sharing discussions have not yet commenced, insiders reveal that the internal list showcases the BJP’s negotiation priorities.
The list designates eight prominent BJP leaders to oversee election activities in 41 Assembly constituencies throughout the state. Leaders such as Arvind Menon, Sudhakar Reddy, L. Murugan, Pon Radhakrishnan, Tamilisai Soundararajan, H. Raja, Vanathi Srinivasan, and K. Annamalai have been assigned to these constituencies, clearly indicating the BJP’s aim to aggressively pursue these seats during negotiations.
This allocation of campaign managers is regarded as a strategic maneuver aimed at strengthening the party’s footprint in areas where it perceives electoral potential, primarily based on its performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The focus is prominently on the western belt of Tamil Nadu, with Coimbatore district becoming a significant target. The BJP has pinpointed eight constituencies within this district: Kinathukadavu, Coimbatore North, Kavundampalayam, Singanallur, Pollachi, Coimbatore South, Valparai (SC), and Mettupalayam, highlighting the party’s relatively robust organizational foundation in the region.
This focus on the west also encompasses Tiruppur district (Tiruppur North, Tiruppur South, and Udumalpet), Nilgiris district (Ooty and Coonoor), and Krishnagiri district (Hosur and Thalli).
Out of the 15 western Tamil Nadu constituencies listed, the BJP was the runner-up in nine Assembly segments during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Significantly, all eight senior leaders have been assigned to this western cluster, emphasizing the region's importance to the party.
A similar focus is observed in Kanniyakumari district, where the BJP has a history of better performance. The party was the runner-up in all five identified constituencies from this district – Nagercoil, Colachel, Padmanabhapuram, Vilavancode, and Killiyoor – in 2024.
Kanniyakumari, alongside Coimbatore, showcased the BJP’s strongest parliamentary performances in Tamil Nadu.
In southern Tamil Nadu, the selected constituencies include Madurai North, Madurai South, and Thirupparankundram, the latter gaining increased attention after the recent Karthigai Deepam controversy.
Other identified constituencies include Radhapuram and Nanguneri in Tirunelveli district, Srivaikuntam in Thoothukudi, Paramakudi (SC) and Mudukulathur in Ramanathapuram, Tenkasi, Rajapalayam in Virudhunagar, and Karaikudi in Sivaganga.
In Chennai, the BJP is focusing on T Nagar, Velachery, Mylapore, and Virugambakkam, all located in Chennai South, where the party garnered over 26 percent of the vote in 2024, pushing the AIADMK into third place.
