Agartala, Jan 15 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam and prominent BJP figure, Himanta Biswa Sarma, voiced his strong belief on Thursday that the party will successfully maintain its hold on power during the upcoming Assembly elections, which are set to take place in the next few months.
After participating in prayers at the Mata Tripura Sundari temple located in Udaipur, Gomati district of Tripura, Sarma mentioned that the announcement of poll dates for the Assam Legislative Assembly elections is expected in February this year. He expressed confidence in the BJP's return to power, bolstered by the achievements of the BJP government.
Sarma asserted that if elections were conducted today, the outcomes would undoubtedly favor the BJP. Nevertheless, he acknowledged the unpredictable nature of politics, cautioning that any predictions regarding election results might be hasty. Still, he maintained that the BJP stands in a robust position in Assam at this moment.
The focus of the elections will revolve around two primary issues: development and identity, as highlighted by the Chief Minister in a media briefing. He emphasized that the BJP had successfully fulfilled all the commitments made to the public in its previous election manifesto.
According to Sarma, his administration has created job opportunities for 1.60 lakh young individuals over the last five years, ensuring that eligible candidates secure employment devoid of any corruption or malpractice.
He also claimed that his government had retrieved nearly two lakh bighas of land that was reportedly occupied by illegal Bangladeshi settlers. Sarma voiced his dissatisfaction with the West Bengal government's perceived inaction regarding infiltration from Bangladesh.
He stated that the West Bengal government has not sufficiently contributed to the national initiative aimed at curbing illegal infiltration from across the Bangladesh border. Sarma pointed out that Assam and Tripura have been proactive in detaining infiltrators from Bangladesh, while similar actions seem lacking in West Bengal.
Earlier that day, upon his arrival at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala, Sarma was welcomed by Tripura BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee, Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, and BJP leader Bipin Debbarma. Sources within the BJP indicated that Sarma might convene meetings with state BJP leaders later that evening.
