Is the BJP Undermining the Constitution's Spirit? Rahul Gandhi Questions
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Raebareli, Jan 20 (NationPress) Congress MP Rahul Gandhi launched a critical critique of the BJP and the central administration on Tuesday, claiming that the RSS and BJP are trying to erode the essence of the Constitution and compromise the principles of its founder.
Speaking to party members and supporters at the Bhuemau Guest House during his visit to Raebareli, Gandhi remarked that the nation is experiencing a scenario akin to the pre-Independence period, where the land, rights, and entitlements of ordinary citizens are being stripped away.
He accused the government of seizing land, limiting rights, and reallocating funds intended for public welfare to large corporates.
Encouraging party members to stand strong, Gandhi asserted that the Congress remains committed to supporting workers and the marginalized, opposing what he labeled as the “anti-people policies” of the central administration.
On the topic of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), he highlighted that under the Congress administration, the program was established to empower local governance by providing them with responsibilities and financial independence while ensuring minimum wages for the underprivileged. He criticized the current government for centralizing authority, dismantling protections for the poor, and “disrespecting Gandhiji by merely renaming schemes.”
“The core issue is not simply about renaming initiatives; it’s about stripping away the rights and safeguards of workers,” Gandhi emphasized, noting that the Congress is actively campaigning nationwide to protect MGNREGA and uphold the rights of laborers.
He revealed that he has personally taken the lead on the ‘Save MGNREGA Campaign’ in Raebareli. During his visit to Umran village in the Unchahar Assembly constituency, he engaged with MGNREGA workers and locals, who expressed concerns over delayed employment opportunities and wage payments.
“MGNREGA is not merely a program; it embodies the dignity of poor laborers and their right to work. We will protect it at all costs,” he declared.
Throughout his visit, Gandhi inaugurated 31 development initiatives under the MP Local Area Development Scheme and laid the groundwork for eight new projects. He also kicked off the Raebareli Premier League T-20 cricket tournament at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, engaging with players to promote local sports talent.
Later, Gandhi visited the home of Municipal Chairman Shatrughan Sonkar to discuss local matters. This meeting is viewed as politically significant.
