Agartala, July 24 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister of Tripura and seasoned CPI (M) leader Manik Sarkar stated on Thursday that should the BJP secure victory in the Bihar Assembly elections via Special Intensive Revision (SIR), they are likely to replicate this strategy in other states.
Speaking at a party gathering, Sarkar pointed out that the BJP and its partners, including the Janata Dal (United), are aware that the forthcoming Bihar assembly elections, anticipated in November, will not be straightforward; hence, the saffron party, with the assistance of the Election Commission, initiated the SIR.
“If the BJP succeeds and gains electoral advantage in the Bihar assembly polls through the current SIR of the electoral rolls, the same approach will be adopted in other states preparing for elections — Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry,” the former CPI (M) politburo member asserted.
Sarkar, who led Tripura for two decades (1998 to 2018), highlighted that reports indicate that between 50 to 52 lakh individuals have been removed from the electoral rolls due to the SIR, predominantly affecting Muslims and Dalits.
“Following a SIR last year, the final electoral rolls were released in Bihar in January this year, along with other states, and these rolls will be used for upcoming state assembly elections,” he explained.
He accused the BJP of adhering to RSS ideology, claiming they aim to govern the country while undermining democratic practices and constitutional provisions.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India (ECI) informed a Tipra Motha Party (TMP) delegation on Wednesday that the SIR of electoral rolls would be implemented nationwide, as stated by party leader Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma after meeting with the electoral body.
A nine-member TMP team, led by Debbarma, met with the full ECI, including Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, requesting a SIR in Tripura akin to the process being applied in Bihar.
Post-meeting, Debbarma, a former royal figure, informed the media that a primary topic of discussion was the immediate execution of the SIR in Tripura, with the Commission reassuring that the SIR would be executed across the country, including Tripura.
“Illegal migration is impacting our state and the northeastern region; if we fail to identify illegal voters, our future generations are at risk. The good news is that the ECI has confirmed that SIR will be conducted nationwide, including in Tripura,” asserted the TMP leader.
The TMP has submitted a letter to the ECI requesting the SIR for Tripura to be carried out alongside a comprehensive door-to-door verification process, similar to the model recently employed in Bihar.
