Rudraprayag (Uttarakhand), June 18 (NationPress) - In a tragic incident on the Kedarnath Yatra trekking route in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district, at least two individuals have lost their lives, one is unaccounted for, and three others, including a woman, suffered injuries when massive boulders descended from the mountainside near Junglechatti ghat on Wednesday.
The calamity struck at approximately 11:20 a.m. as a landslide caused boulders to tumble onto the pathway, impacting pilgrims, porters, and palanquin bearers amidst heavy foot traffic on this revered trail, according to rescue officials.
Rescue teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local police swiftly arrived at the scene to provide evacuation and medical support.
As per Sector Officer Bhim Bali, one additional individual is feared lost, and ongoing search operations are in progress.
"The Rudraprayag Police, local police units, and DDRF teams acted promptly, managing to rescue the injured. The woman incurred minor injuries, while two men with serious injuries were transported to the Gaurikund health center for advanced treatment," stated a police spokesperson.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed sorrow regarding the incident and instructed the administration to provide urgent relief support.
"Chief Minister Dhami has conveyed condolences over the landslide event along the Kedarnath route. He has prayed for the eternal peace of the deceased souls and the swift recovery of the injured. The Chief Minister has also mandated the district administration to ensure immediate medical assistance and refer the injured to a higher facility if necessary," his office announced via a post on X.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for various regions of Uttarakhand, cautioning of heavy downpours.
Authorities have advised pilgrims and local residents to exercise caution, minimize unnecessary travel, and remain vigilant regarding the threats of floods and landslides in the impacted regions.
This latest tragedy follows a helicopter crash near Gaurikund that resulted in seven fatalities, including a 23-month-old child.
The helicopter, which was flying from Kedarnath Dham to Guptkashi, went down in a wooded area and ignited in flames.
