Brasilia, July 15 (NationPress) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has declared the establishment of an inter-ministerial committee aimed at coordinating economic and trade countermeasures to safeguard the country's economy.
The decision follows US President Donald Trump's announcement of a 50 percent tariff on all imports from Brazil, effective August 1.
The inter-ministerial committee is being formed through a decree that regulates the economic reciprocity law and is set to be led by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, who also serves as the minister of development, industry, trade, and services, according to reports from Xinhua news agency.
The committee's inaugural meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, with representatives from the industrial sector expected to participate.
Previously, Trump threatened Brazil with a significant tariff of 50 percent starting on August 1, as detailed in a letter sent to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
In his letter, shared on Truth Social, Trump accused Lula of pursuing a “Witch Hunt that should end IMMEDIATELY!” regarding allegations against former president Jair Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro, who has previously expressed his close relationship with Trump, is currently on trial for allegedly attempting to orchestrate a coup against Lula.
Lula has promised to respond if Trump follows through with his threat.
“Brazil is a sovereign nation with independent institutions and will not accept any form of tutelage,” Lula stated in a post on X.
“Any measure to increase tariffs unilaterally will be met with a response in accordance with Brazil’s Law of Economic Reciprocity,” he added.
