Brasilia, July 10 (NationPress) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva unequivocally dismissed any form of foreign oversight on Thursday (Indian time) following US President Donald Trump's announcement of a staggering 50 percent tariff on products originating from Brazil.
Trump revealed this decision in his recent tariff communication shared on social media, where he accused Brazil of launching "attacks" on American technology firms and conducting a "witch hunt" against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is under scrutiny for his alleged involvement in a scheme to disrupt the 2022 election.
In a statement posted on X, Lula emphasized, "Brazil is a sovereign nation with independent institutions and will not accept any form of tutelage." He further stated that the judicial actions against those implicated in the coup attempt are strictly under Brazil's Judicial Branch and are not open to outside interference or intimidation that could jeopardize the integrity of the country's institutions.
He added, "In terms of digital platforms, Brazilian society will not tolerate hate speech, racism, child pornography, scams, fraud, or any violations of human rights and democratic freedoms." Lula insisted that all businesses, whether local or international, must adhere to Brazilian laws to operate within the country.
Moreover, the Brazilian President contested the assertion regarding a US trade deficit with Brazil as "inaccurate", pointing out that US government statistics show a significant surplus of $410 billion in trade with Brazil over the past 15 years.
He concluded, "Any unilateral tariff hikes will be managed according to Brazil's Economic Reciprocity Law. Upholding sovereignty, respect, and the steadfast defense of Brazilian interests are our guiding principles in international relations."
