Brasilia, Aug 14 (NationPress) - Brazil has introduced a new suite of initiatives aimed at assisting exporters affected by the 50 percent tariff enacted by the US government.
Unveiled on Wednesday, this program, named Sovereign Brazil, allocates 30 billion reais (approximately 5.562 billion US dollars) for low-interest loans, tax incentives, and additional support, focusing primarily on small enterprises and those involved in the trade of perishable goods, according to Xinhua News Agency.
The initiative also streamlines government procurement processes for impacted rural and agro-industrial sectors, enhances the export guarantee framework, and revitalizes a tax refund program within the production chain.
During the announcement, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva challenged the US government's rationale behind the tariffs on Brazilian goods.
"It is crucial to emphasize that we must not react with panic or excessive enthusiasm during a crisis. Crises exist to inspire innovation. The troubling aspect is that there are no valid reasons for these tariffs on Brazil," the president stated.
Despite the perceived injustice of the tariffs, Brazil will refrain from retaliatory actions for the moment, he noted.
"We are not announcing any reciprocal measures. Observe our adeptness in negotiation. Initially, we prefer not to take actions that would deteriorate our relationship," he added.
He addressed one of the justifications provided by the White House for the tariffs: that prosecuting Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro for his attempts to cling to power constituted a human rights violation.
"Brazil has no grounds for being taxed, and we will not accept any claims suggesting that we disregard human rights or that our judicial processes are arbitrary," Lula asserted.
Earlier in July, President Lula stated that Brazil would not accept external interference in its domestic affairs, amidst escalating tensions with the US regarding new tariffs and digital regulations.
While addressing a crowd of thousands at a national congress in Goiania, Lula dismissed the notion that the tariffs were connected to the prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
"We will not tolerate interference from any foreign nation," Lula declared.
Lula promised a civil and democratic approach while announcing that US-based digital platforms would need to adhere to Brazilian legislation and pay taxes. He accused these companies of fueling disinformation and negatively impacting Brazilian society.
"This nation is sovereign. No foreign entity dictates orders to the president of Brazil. My sole responsibility lies with the Brazilian populace," he emphasized.
