New Delhi/Hyderabad, April 20 (NationPress) A three-member delegation of leaders from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is currently in Delhi to engage in discussions with legal professionals about the party's forthcoming strategies concerning alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram project and the potential disqualification of BRS MLAs accused of defecting to the Congress.

Following the instructions of former Telangana Chief Minister and BRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), the team departed for the national capital on Monday.

The delegation includes BRS's deputy leader in the Assembly and former minister T. Harish Rao, ex-MP Vinod Kumar, and Rajya Sabha member Vaddiraju Ravichandra.

They are scheduled to meet prominent Supreme Court lawyers to outline the party’s approach regarding these two significant legal matters.

The Telangana High Court is poised to announce its verdict on April 22 concerning a series of writ petitions submitted by KCR, Harish Rao, and two others, which seek to annul the findings of the Justice P.C. Ghose Commission that investigated alleged discrepancies in the execution of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme.

KCR, Harish Rao, retired IAS officer and former Chief Secretary S.K. Joshi, along with serving IAS officer Smitha Sabharwal, have challenged the commission's report through their petitions.

After reviewing the petitions, a bench consisting of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G.M. Mohiuddin had reserved its judgement last month. The verdict's announcement was initially set for April 8 but has now been postponed to April 22.

The BRS delegation will also explore the option of appealing to the Supreme Court, should the High Court reject the petitions lodged by the party leaders.

The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS), recognized as one of the world's most extensive multi-stage lift irrigation projects, was initiated by the previous BRS government in May 2016, with its primary component inaugurated by KCR in 2019.

In March 2024, the Congress-led government established a commission led by former Supreme Court judge Pinaki Chandra Ghose to investigate alleged irregularities in the planning, design, construction, quality control, operation, and maintenance of the Medigadda, Annaram, and Sundilla barrages associated with the Kaleshwaram project.

The commission submitted its findings to the Telangana government on July 31, 2025.

The report implicated KCR, holding him both directly and indirectly responsible for the irregularities in the project's planning, execution, and maintenance, also naming Harish Rao, then Chief Secretary Joshi, and then Secretary to the Chief Minister Smitha Sabharwal.

The BRS team’s visit to Delhi is particularly significant amid ongoing developments regarding the petitions for disqualifying 10 BRS MLAs who reportedly defected to the Congress in 2024.

BRS leaders have contested the Telangana Assembly Speaker's decision to dismiss petitions aimed at disqualifying these MLAs in the High Court.

Last week, the High Court instructed the MLAs to submit their responses by May 6.
