Aizawl, Nov 20 (NationPress) In a significant operation, the Border Security Force (BSF) in collaboration with the Excise and Narcotics Department of Mizoram has successfully confiscated a large amount of highly addictive methamphetamine tablets valued at over Rs 26 crore. Officials reported the arrest of two individuals involved in drug trafficking, both of whom hold Myanmar nationality.
According to a spokesperson from the BSF, personnel stationed at the Mizoram and Cachar frontier acted on credible intelligence regarding the illicit movement of narcotics between Seling and Aizawl.
A coordinated operation with the Excise and Narcotics Department ensued, leading to the interception of two suspects traveling on Scooties along National Highway-6 (NH-6) in the region between Seling and Tuirial in Aizawl district. During initial questioning, the suspects admitted to hiding a stash in nearby bushes.
In the presence of two independent witnesses, a search of the indicated area revealed two plastic bags. One bag contained 15 packages of methamphetamine tablets (Dragon Brand) totaling 14.905 kg, while the other held 49 soap cases of heroin weighing 707 grams.
Both Myanmar nationals were detained on-site, and the narcotics were seized by the Excise and Narcotics Department following proper legal protocols.
The BSF highlighted that this notable seizure and the apprehension of drug traffickers exemplify the effective collaboration and operational synergy between the BSF and partner agencies in Mizoram.
This operation reinforces the commitment of these agencies to thwart and disrupt the illicit activities of cross-border drug smuggling networks operating along the India-Myanmar border.
The BSF remains dedicated to protecting the nation's borders and will persist in working closely with allied agencies to cultivate a drug-free society.
The seized methamphetamine tablets, often referred to as Yaba or party tablets, are a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine and are classified as a 'crazy drug' in India. Notably, Mizoram shares a 510 km and 318 km unfenced border with Myanmar and Bangladesh respectively.
Myanmar's Chin state is notorious for the smuggling of various drugs, rare wildlife, and other contraband commodities through six districts of Mizoram: Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.
