Aizawl, Nov 3 (NationPress) Officials from the Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department successfully intercepted more than 15 kg of highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, with a street value exceeding Rs 45 crore, and apprehended four drug traffickers, including two nationals from Myanmar, as reported on Monday.
A specialized team from the Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department conducted a significant operation in the New Champhai area, resulting in the capture of two drug traffickers and the recovery of 10.1 kg of methamphetamine tablets.
The identified drug traffickers were Zamsianmanga (41) and Ronald Liana (26), both hailing from the Sagaing Division of Myanmar.
In another operation, another team halted a vehicle in the vicinity of Champhai town, seizing an additional 5.11 kg of methamphetamine tablets.
Two Indian nationals were also detained during this second operation, identified as Sahanoor Alom (26), from Ranigram in Sribhumi district (formerly part of Karimganj district) in southern Assam, and Golap Hussain (32), from Bagimara in the Sonamura subdivision of Tripura’s Sepahijala district.
The vehicle, which bore an Assam registration number and was utilized by the drug traffickers, has also been confiscated.
Authorities reported that all four suspects have been charged under the applicable sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985, with cases filed at the Champhai Police station.
This drug seizure represents a significant achievement in the ongoing efforts to combat cross-border narcotics smuggling from Myanmar through the porous border of Mizoram.
Six districts in Mizoram, particularly Champhai, are increasingly exploited for the trafficking of methamphetamine tablets, synthetic drugs, exotic wildlife, firearms, and ammunition.
The methamphetamine tablets, commonly referred to as Yaba or party tablets, are a dangerous combination of methamphetamine and caffeine, colloquially known as the ‘crazy drug’. These substances are illegal in India.
It is noteworthy that Myanmar shares a 1,643 km unfenced border with four northeastern states—Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Nagaland—serving as a crucial transit route for various drugs, particularly heroin and methamphetamine tablets.
At least six districts in Mizoram share the border with Myanmar, including Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.
