Kolkata, April 1 (NationPress) Advocates at the Calcutta High Court, representing three associations, initiated a partial cease-work on Tuesday in response to the transfer of a Delhi High Court judge to their court.
The advocates, who are members of the Calcutta High Court Bar Association, the Calcutta High Court Bar Library Club, and the Incorporated Law Society of Calcutta, refrained from participating in any hearings at any bench until 3:30 p.m.
The recent transfer of Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma from the Delhi High Court to the Calcutta High Court was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium and subsequently notified by the Centre.
The three associations argue that the transfer of the judge, who has faced serious allegations since October 2024, to the Calcutta High Court is ill-advised.
Senior advocate and four-time Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member, Kalyan Banerjee, noted that in the past, judges with complaints or those nearing retirement were moved to the Calcutta High Court.
“Why should we accept the notion of viewing the Calcutta High Court as a dumping ground? It would be better if the judges previously transferred from the Calcutta High Court were returned instead,” Banerjee stated.
Last week, the Secretaries from the three associations sent a letter to the Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, expressing their objections to the transfer of Justice Sharma.
“While we acknowledge routine transfers in the administration of justice, we believe this transfer does not fit that norm. We suspect it is linked to specific allegations regarding the conduct and operation of the Learned Judge,” read the joint memorandum signed by the Secretaries, Sankar Prasad Dalapati, Sabyasachi Chaudhury, and Paritosh Sinha.
