Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 23 (NationPress) A significant amount of cash, amounting to lakhs of rupees, was once again seized in West Bengal in anticipation of the forthcoming Assembly elections, as reported by the police on Monday.
Officials from the Static Surveillance Team (SST) and local police recovered over Rs 3.7 lakh in cash from three vehicles during operations at two distinct checkpoints near the West Bengal-Assam border in the Cooch Behar district.
In connection to this case, authorities have detained three individuals, including one from Assam, and are currently conducting interrogations.
The recovery of cash ahead of the state Assembly elections has raised concerns throughout the district.
On Sunday night, officers stationed at the Jorai More checkpoint in Bakshirhat stopped a vehicle with a West Bengal registration plate entering from Assam.
Upon inspection, they discovered Rs 57,700 concealed in a bag inside the car.
The police confiscated the funds after Birendra Saha, a passenger from Darjeeling, failed to provide any legitimate documentation for the cash.
Alongside this, the individual was taken into custody.
In a simultaneous operation, officers from the Bakshirhat Police Station examined a vehicle belonging to Bikash Saha, a resident of Barbisha in Kumargram, at the Sankosh checkpoint.
From this vehicle, authorities found Rs 1,14,300.
As Bikash Saha could not produce valid documentation regarding the funds, he was also detained.
On Monday morning, the SST and police at the Sankosh checkpoint intercepted another vehicle with an Assam license plate entering West Bengal.
During the search, they recovered Rs 1,99,500 in cash.
Since Toton Bhowmik, a resident of Assam, was unable to provide proper documentation for the money, he was detained and is under investigation.
According to Election Commission regulations, carrying cash above a certain limit without the appropriate documentation is a criminal offense.
Consequently, as no valid papers could be presented, authorities have seized the cash from all three vehicles.
The Bakshirhat Police are currently probing whether this money was intended for illegal activities or to sway voters ahead of the elections.
