Massive Cash Seized from Vehicle Boot Near Kolkata Amid Assembly Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 20 (NationPress) In a significant operation, the Kolkata Police uncovered a substantial sum of cash hidden in the trunk of a vehicle in New Town, situated on Kolkata's northern outskirts, on Friday.
Following directives from the newly appointed Commissioner of Kolkata Police, security measures have been enhanced in light of the Assembly elections. This includes rigorous “naka” checks at crucial intersections within and around the city.
A high-ranking police official mentioned that during morning hours, officers stationed at a check-post near City Centre-II in New Town halted a vehicle. The driver, identified as Suresh Thakur, was the sole occupant.
Upon being questioned by the police, the driver exhibited reluctance to open the trunk. However, after persistent requests, he complied, revealing a bag. Upon inspection, officers discovered it was filled with bundles of cash, all in Rs 500 denominations.
Subsequently, the police interrogated the driver regarding the origins of the cash. His inability to provide a convincing explanation led to the confiscation of the money and his arrest.
As per a city police official, investigations are ongoing to identify the owner of the funds, as well as the intended recipient. The total amount of cash seized amounted to Rs 25 lakh.
This marks the third significant cash recovery in West Bengal within the week.
Previously, on March 19, police seized a total of Rs 11.75 lakh during similar “naka” checks at two locations: one in Baruipur of South 24 Parganas district and another at Alipurduar Chowpatty Crossing in Alipurduar district.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has expressed concern over the potential misuse of illicit cash to influence voters in the upcoming elections. To address this, the ECI has appointed 294 general observers for the state, making West Bengal unique among the five states and one union territory holding elections, ensuring one observer for each of the 294 Assembly constituencies.
Additionally, the ECI has deployed 188 police observers, the highest number among these states, along with 100 expenditure observers, placing second in this category.
