Kolkata, Nov 17 (NationPress) The Special Task Force (STF) of the West Bengal Police made a significant discovery on Monday, recovering Rs 5 crore in cash from a vehicle near Akanksha Crossing in New Town, leading to the arrest of two individuals, including the car's owner.

This operation was initiated following a tip-off from a confidential informant.

Authorities confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with this case, and an investigation is currently being conducted.

The seized money was reportedly being transported from the New Town area, with Bengal STF actively searching for the origins of these funds.

The recovery of such a substantial amount of cash during a routine vehicle inspection has raised alarms, particularly with state Assembly polls approaching next year.

According to law enforcement, this significant cash recovery has drawn attention, especially in light of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of West Bengal's electoral rolls initiated by the Election Commission.

Investigators are scrutinizing the source of the money, its intended destination, and its purpose.

“A raid led to the recovery of Rs 5 crore in cash from a car. The cash has been confiscated, and two individuals have been detained. An investigation is underway to trace the source of these funds,” stated a police spokesperson.

Just last week, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) uncovered substantial amounts of cash at a businessman’s residence in the Taratala area, linked to a municipal recruitment scam.

Earlier this month, ED teams executed searches at approximately ten locations throughout the city, including Salt Lake and Beliaghata. In connection with the municipal recruitment corruption case, a businessman’s home in Taratala was also searched, yielding a significant cash recovery.

With this latest STF operation, investigators are probing the possibility of an organized crime syndicate or corruption network operating in the area. Further interrogation of the two arrested individuals is ongoing.
