Kolkata, May 14 (NationPress) - On Wednesday, the Kolkata Police announced the arrest of a police officer linked to the Special Task Force (STF), connected to a brazen robbery that occurred earlier this month. A significant sum belonging to a foreign exchange trading company was stolen in broad daylight on the city streets.
The officer in question, identified as Mintu Sarkar, had been part of the STF within the city police. Originally hailing from the South Dinajpur district in northern West Bengal, Sarkar was apprehended late Tuesday night by the Detective Department while they were investigating the incident, according to a police insider.
This marks the seventh arrest linked to this case. Investigators are probing whether Sarkar was actively involved in the robbery or merely served as an intermediary.
On May 5, around noon, two employees from the foreign exchange trading office boarded a taxi outside their office located in Entally, central Kolkata. They were carrying approximately Rs 2.66 crore intended for a bank deposit.
After traveling less than a kilometer, the taxi driver abruptly slowed down, allowing two other individuals to forcibly enter the vehicle.
Following their instructions, the taxi was driven to a secluded area where the employees were robbed of the cash. The assailants fled the scene in the same taxi.
The employees promptly reported the incident to the local police, triggering an investigation by the Detective Department, which resulted in the arrest of six individuals, including one employee from the same trading entity.
During interrogations, the suspects implicated the arrested officer as their seventh accomplice. Late Tuesday night, detectives visited his home for questioning.
Due to inconsistencies in his statements, he was subsequently arrested.
