Bengaluru, Oct 1 (NationPress) In a robust defense of the caste census in Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized that inequality persists within society, making the need for survey data crucial for its eradication. He highlighted the importance of identifying communities grappling with illiteracy, poverty, and landlessness, among other challenges.
During a media interaction on Wednesday in Bengaluru, following a visit to Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge at M.S. Ramaiah Hospital, Siddaramaiah responded to Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy's claim that a caste survey would not facilitate social upliftment. He asserted that this survey is essential for addressing social, economic, and educational disparities, echoing the sentiments of Babasaheb Ambedkar, who advocated for the inclusion of disadvantaged groups in the mainstream.
The Chief Minister accused the BJP of wanting to preserve inequality, insisting that they intend for certain castes to remain dominant. He noted that, under the advocacy of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the state government, the Central government is now progressing towards conducting the caste survey.
Regarding the severe floods impacting North Karnataka, CM Siddaramaiah remarked that nearly 95 percent of the flooding occurred in nine districts, including Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bagalkote, Bidar, Yadgir, Raichur, Hubballi-Dharwad, and Gadag.
In response to Kumaraswamy's assurance of Central government flood relief, Siddaramaiah welcomed the sentiment but reminded that during the 2023 drought, the state had to petition the Supreme Court for assistance when the Central government did not provide relief. He mentioned that if relief is granted, the state government will submit a proposal.
On Tuesday, CM Siddaramaiah conducted an aerial survey over four flood-affected districts in North Karnataka. After visiting Kharge at the hospital, he reported that Kharge’s health is stable.
He also extended his Dusshera wishes to the people of Karnataka and announced his participation in the upcoming Dasara festival events in Mysuru on Thursday.
