Dharwad, Oct 2 (NationPress) Mocking the internal discord within the Karnataka Congress regarding power distribution, Union Minister for Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi asserted on Thursday that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is initiating a caste census in the state as a tactic to preserve his role.
While addressing the media in Dharwad, Joshi remarked, "Though Siddaramaiah has vowed to serve as Chief Minister for five years, individuals from Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar's faction are already contemplating a leadership transition. In light of this, CM Siddaramaiah has embarked on the caste census as a political strategy to protect his position as Chief Minister."
Joshi further criticized the Siddaramaiah administration regarding the ongoing social, economic, and academic survey known as the caste census in Karnataka, emphasizing that the Central government has already resolved to execute a national census, and thus there is no resistance to enumeration.
"Nonetheless, the state’s survey comprises unnecessary and personal inquiries. What is the significance of categorizing individuals as ‘Christian Lingayat’ or ‘Christian Brahmin’? This census appears to be orchestrated to promote the conversion of Hindus," Joshi condemned.
He also highlighted that the survey includes queries such as, “Are you affiliated with any social organization?” Joshi expressed his outrage, arguing that this represents an attempt to fragment Hindu society.
Additionally, Joshi noted that leaders from the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community have convened and expressed the sentiment that, irrespective of caste, all are Hindus. “Yet, the Congress-led government is implementing such measures politically to fracture Hindu society,” Joshi alleged.
Commenting on the recent remarks by state Congress leaders concerning the supposed power-sharing agreement between him and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for equal terms, State Congress President and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar clarified that no one holds the right to address this matter.
On Thursday, Shivakumar responded to journalists’ inquiries and issued a stern warning.
“Anyone discussing power-sharing is engaging in anti-party activities. Such discussions are detrimental to the party,” he declared.
Shivakumar urged all party members to avoid such discussions, asserting that these comments tarnish the party's reputation in the state.
Shivakumar reaffirmed that CM Siddaramaiah has made it clear that the high command’s decision is final. “We shall adhere to the high command’s decision. For us, the party holds greater significance than individuals,” he stated.
“There is no discourse on power-sharing. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has already clarified this. No one should discuss it. Those who persist in speaking on the matter are harming the party’s image,” he added.
