The CBI initiated this case on Friday following a complaint against the accused, Scientist-C Abhijeet Singh, alleging that he demanded Rs. 70,000 to expedite the processing of a file in connection with a client of the complainant.
A trap was set by the CBI on Friday, resulting in the accused being caught red-handed while accepting the bribe from the complainant.
Searches were also undertaken at both the residence and workplace of the accused.
Officials confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
Earlier this week, the CBI apprehended a stenographer from the Income Tax Department for seeking a bribe of Rs 1.50 lakh to settle an issue regarding Rs 19 lakh in tax dues.
Abhinandan Singh, the stenographer from the Non-Corporate Ward-Income Tax Department in Chennai, was arrested on Monday and subsequently presented in a Special CBI Court on Tuesday.
The court ordered Abhinandan Singh into judicial custody after being informed by the CBI that no further questioning was necessary at that moment.
Post-arrest, searches at his residence revealed incriminating documents.
The CBI stated that the case against Abhinandan Singh was registered on February 2, following allegations that he demanded a bribe equivalent to 10 percent of the outstanding Income Tax dues of Rs 19 lakh for the Assessment Year 2020-2021.
A trap was successfully executed, leading to the catch of the accused in the act of demanding and accepting illegal gratification of Rs 1.50 lakh.
The bribe money was subsequently seized during the operation.
