New Delhi, Dec 23 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended a Superintendent from CGST Audit-I in Mumbai for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from the complainant, as reported by officials on Tuesday.
The individual, identified as Ankit Aggarwal, a Superintendent at CGST Audit-I located in Air India Building at Nariman Point, Mumbai, was taken into custody on Monday.
The CBI initiated the case on December 22, 2025, following a written complaint from the Director of a private firm, who claimed the Superintendent was demanding illegal payments.
On November 26, 2025, during an audit of the complainant's company, the accused allegedly threatened to create a tax demand of Rs 98 Lakh and sought Rs 20 Lakh as a bribe to resolve the matter.
“Following negotiations, the accused settled for Rs 17,00,000 to reduce the supposed tax liability,” stated the CBI's press release.
The initial bribe installment of Rs 5 lakh was scheduled for delivery on December 22.
The CBI conducted a sting operation and caught the accused in the act of accepting the Rs 5 Lakh as part of the bribe.
Subsequent searches at the accused's residence in Mumbai uncovered unreported cash totaling Rs 18.30 Lakh.
During the investigation, deeds for properties valued at Rs 40.315 lakh (dated April 2025) and Rs 32.10 lakh (dated June 2024) were recovered.
Investigators also searched the accused’s workplace, seizing digital evidence related to the audit report he was preparing for the private firm.
The CBI confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
