CBI Files Case Against CGST Inspector for Allegedly Extorting Rs 75,000 from Raipur Chemist

New Delhi, Nov 30 (NationPress) A Central Goods and Services Tax inspector has been implicated by the CBI for reportedly demanding a bribe of Rs 75,000 from a chemist shop proprietor in Raipur to rescind a show cause notice that was served to him.
In a written complaint filed on Thursday, chemist Rahul Verma, who operates a medical store under the name Verma Medical in Amapara, Raipur, accused Soumya Ranjan Mallik, inspector of CGST, Range-II, Division-3, Civil Lines, Raipur, Chhattisgarh, along with Elongka Minj, Superintendent of CGST, of soliciting a bribe of Rs 75,000.
The bribe was allegedly demanded to resolve the issue concerning the notice issued to him.
The accused supposedly informed Verma that if he consented to pay the bribe, no show cause notice would be filed; otherwise, he would be obligated to pay the full amount of Rs 1,73,000 to the government.
The complainant mentioned that he negotiated with the individual seeking the bribe and succeeded in reducing the amount to Rs 60,000. Following the verification of his complaint, the CBI formally registered a case against the CGST inspector.
This incident in Raipur coincides with the federal agency apprehending K. P. Rajan, Superintendent of CGST in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from a complainant.
The CBI lodged a case against the accused Superintendent based on allegations that he requested an undue advantage of Rs 15,000 from Sitaram Choudhary, a representative of an industrial firm, to unblock/release Input Tax Credit of GST.
A trap was set by the CBI, leading to the capture of the accused Superintendent while he was soliciting and accepting the bribe of Rs 15,000 from the complainant.
Subsequent searches were conducted at both the residential and official locations of the accused.
