New Delhi/Aizawl, Feb 5 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed an FIR against three Customs officials, which includes a retired Superintendent and two active Inspectors, regarding an alleged bribery scandal, as reported by sources from the central investigative agency on Thursday.

The CBI indicated that this case was initiated on February 3, following a complaint from the Additional Commissioner of CGST, Guwahati, against the three accused individuals -- Tuanzakhup, Mohan Singh, and Sahil Kumar Sinha, who were previously assigned to the Customs Preventive Force (CPF) in Champhai, Mizoram.

This case has been registered for misusing their official authority and accepting illegal payments to facilitate the release of smuggled items in Mizoram. Allegations suggest that these Customs Officials at CPF, Champhai, during the period from 2022 to 2023, unlawfully seized items like areca nuts (betel nuts) and cigarettes without any documentation and solicited bribes from the affected parties.

Reports claim that after receiving bribes exceeding Rs 35 Lakh in several instances, the seized goods were returned, according to sources from the central investigative agency.

Additionally, it was reported that goods valued over Rs 1.42 crore were discovered missing from the stocks at the godowns related to seizures made in various cases between December 23, 2022, and April 26, 2023.

Search operations are currently underway at the residences of the three accused individuals located in Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh), Guwahati (Assam), Sikar (Rajasthan), Patna (Bihar), and Churachandpur (Manipur).

Previously, numerous officials, local residents, and individuals from Myanmar have been apprehended for their illegal dealings in smuggling or for aiding drug traffickers.

It is noteworthy that Mizoram shares a 510-km unguarded border with Myanmar and a 318-km porous mountainous boundary with Bangladesh.

The Chin state of Myanmar serves as a significant center for the smuggling of various drugs, areca nuts, foreign cigarettes, exotic wildlife, and other illicit goods through six districts in Mizoram, namely Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.
