Kolkata, Aug 13 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced on Wednesday that it has apprehended a fugitive accused linked to a rape case stemming from the post-election violence following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly Elections.
The CBI's press release indicates that the case was officially registered on August 30, 2021.
According to the statement, it is alleged that on May 4, 2021, the accused unlawfully entered the victim's residence and committed the act of rape.
A charge sheet was submitted by the CBI against the accused on May 5, 2022, to the Court of Ld. Special Judge SC/ ST(POA) Act, located in Tamluk, Purba Medinipur.
The accused was released on bail by the Calcutta High Court on September 25, 2024.
Subsequently, the probe agency filed a special leave petition (SLP) with the Supreme Court to contest the Calcutta High Court's ruling.
Despite receiving notice, neither the accused nor his legal representative appeared before the Supreme Court. Following this, on August 2, 2025, a non-bailable warrant for the accused's arrest was issued, directing the CBI to present him before the Supreme Court on August 13, 2025, as per the statement.
Thanks to diligent efforts and technical inputs, the accused, who had been evading capture near a mosque in Ilaychipur, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, has been taken into custody and is set to appear in the Supreme Court today, according to the CBI.
The individual arrested has been identified as Usman Ali @ Ara @ Mir Usman Ali.
The CBI has recently intensified its investigation into the violence that unfolded in West Bengal following the 2021 Assembly elections.
In July, a Trinamool Congress MLA and two Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) councillors were implicated in the supplementary charge sheet concerning the post-poll violence case.
However, the ruling Trinamool Congress party has asserted that these actions are a tactic by the BJP to exert pressure on its leaders as the significant Assembly elections in the state approach next year.
