Kolkata, Sep 26 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced on Friday the apprehension of another absconding suspect named in the chargesheet related to the murder of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar in Kolkata, an incident stemming from post-election violence following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election.
The identified suspect is Amit Das.
According to the statement, “This case, registered on 25.08.2021 at CBI, Kolkata, pertains to the post-poll violence during the state assembly elections in West Bengal in 2021.”
It’s worth mentioning that the CBI completed its investigation and filed a chargesheet on September 30, 2021, against 20 individuals. Subsequently, a supplementary chargesheet was filed on July 30, 2025, including 18 more individuals.
The CBI's statement further elaborated, “The absconding suspect was apprehended today following diligent efforts, utilizing both source information and technical intelligence. The investigation is ongoing.”
Previously, a Trinamool Congress legislator from Kolkata and two councillors from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation were implicated in the case.
The legislator from Beliaghata assembly constituency, Paresh Paul, along with councillors Swapan Samaddar from ward number 58 and Papiya Ghosh from ward number 30, were named as accused. Notably, Samaddar also serves as a member of the KMC's mayor-in-council.
Paul was the only legislator questioned by the CBI in this matter.
Aside from Paul, Samaddar, and Ghosh, the former officer-in-charge of Narkeldanga Police Station, Subhojit Sen, and a former woman sub-inspector, Ratna Sarkar, were also mentioned in the CBI's latest supplementary chargesheet.
To recap, Abhijit Sarkar was murdered on May 2, 2021, shortly after the 2021 West Bengal assembly election results were announced, in which the Trinamool Congress achieved a significant victory.
The investigation initially commenced under the homicide squad of the Kolkata Police, which identified a total of 15 accused individuals in its chargesheet.
Following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, the CBI took over the case in August 2021, registering a case and filing a supplementary chargesheet in September 2021 against 20 accused, including the 15 previously noted by police.
