Kolkata, July 4 (NationPress) In a significant development, two police officials, including a former officer-in-charge of a Kolkata police station, have been implicated as suspects in the recent supplementary chargesheet submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at a special court in Kolkata. This relates to the murder of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar, which occurred during the post-election turmoil in West Bengal following the 2021 Assembly elections.
The individual identified in the new chargesheet is Subhojit Sen, the former officer-in-charge of Narkeldanga Police Station. Alongside him, Ratna Sarkar, the former lady sub-inspector at the same station, has also been named as an accused.
This development adds to the list of a Trinamool Congress legislator and two councillors from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) previously accused in the case. The legislator is from the Beliaghata assembly constituency in north Kolkata, while the councillors are Swapan Samaddar from ward 58 and Papiya Ghosh from ward 30. Notably, Samaddar also serves as a member of the mayor-in-council of KMC.
On July 2, the CBI announced the submission of this latest supplementary chargesheet, which included 18 additional accused individuals. This brings the total number of accused in the case to 38.
Initially, the homicide squad from the detective department of Kolkata Police began the investigation and named 15 accused in their chargesheet. Following an order from the Calcutta High Court, the CBI took over the case in August 2021, subsequently filing a supplementary chargesheet against 20 accused, which included the initial 15.
Recently, the CBI arrested Arun Dey, a primary accused in the murder of Sarkar, four years after the incident. Dey had previously been the subject of a ₹50,000 reward announced by the CBI.
To recall, Abhijit Sarkar was murdered on May 2, 2021, immediately after the declaration of results from the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections, where the Trinamool Congress achieved a decisive victory.
