Kolkata, Aug 5 (NationPress) The Calcutta High Court has granted conditional bail to two personnel from the Kolkata Police who were implicated in the murder case of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar. This decision came after they were named in the latest supplementary charge sheet submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the post-poll violence following the 2021 Assembly elections. The two accused, namely Ratna Sarkar, a former woman sub-inspector from Narkeldanga Police Station, and home guard Dipankar Debnath, had sought bail from the High Court on July 21.
During the hearing before the single-judge bench of Justice Jay Sengupta, both Sarkar and Debnath were granted bail. The incident that led to this legal battle involved the tragic death of Abhijit Sarkar, who was killed during the violent aftermath of the election results on May 2, 2021, shortly after the Trinamool Congress secured a significant victory.
On July 2 of this year, the CBI announced the filing of a supplementary charge sheet that included 18 additional accused individuals, raising the total number of accused to 38. Initially, the Kolkata Police homicide squad began the investigation, naming 15 individuals in their charge sheet. However, due to a directive from the Calcutta High Court, the CBI took over the inquiry in August 2021, subsequently filing a supplementary charge sheet that identified 20 accused, comprising those previously charged by the city police.
