CBI arrests Delhi sub-registrar, aide for ₹80,000 bribe in property case
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday, 18 July arrested Nand Kishore Meena, Sub-Registrar at the Punjabi Bagh, Nangloi office of the Delhi government's revenue department, along with a private individual, Subhash Gandhi, after catching them red-handed accepting a bribe of ₹80,000 to process property documents. The arrests followed a formal complaint and a CBI trap operation, officials confirmed.
How the Trap Was Laid
The CBI registered the case on Friday on the basis of a complaint alleging that Meena had demanded ₹1 lakh from the complainant to execute a gift deed for a property. Investigators conducted a trap operation and caught both the accused — the sub-registrar and the private person — at the moment of demanding and accepting the negotiated amount of ₹80,000, according to an official statement.
Separate CBI Action in Jammu and Kashmir
In a concurrent development, the CBI also arrested Liyakat Javed Sheikh, an Assistant Engineer with the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in Shopian, Jammu and Kashmir, in a separate trap operation. Sheikh had allegedly sought an illegal payment from a resident in exchange for processing and facilitating the release of compensation for damage caused to the complainant's house during a PMGSY road construction project. The initial demand was reportedly ₹50,000, which was subsequently negotiated down to ₹30,000 during CBI's verification process, according to the agency's statement.
CBI's Stance on Corruption
The CBI stated that its firm action against corrupt public servants reflects its commitment to eliminating corruption from public office. This comes amid a broader pattern of the agency conducting trap operations targeting officials across departments and states. Both cases were registered and acted upon on the same day, signalling a coordinated anti-corruption push.
How to Report Bribery
The CBI has urged citizens who encounter bribery demands from public officials to come forward with complaints. Reports can be filed at the Office of CBI, ACB, Delhi, 1st Floor, CBI Building, CGO Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi, or by calling 011-24367887 or mobile number 9650394847.
