Is Suresh Gopi Celebrating the Centre’s Approval of Railway Projects in Kerala?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 10 (NationPress) The Union government has given the green light to two significant railway initiatives designed to alleviate Kerala’s persistent rail travel challenges, stated BJP MP Suresh Gopi on Tuesday.
The initiatives include the doubling of the Alappuzha-Ambalappuzha railway line and the construction of the Palakkad Town-Parali bypass line, which have been endorsed by the Union Railway Ministry, Gopi added.
As per Suresh Gopi, this decision represents a crucial advancement for railway development in Kerala and demonstrates the Centre’s dedication to enhancing transport infrastructure within the state.
He noted that these approvals were made possible under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and are set to mitigate longstanding operational challenges impacting both passenger and freight services.
The Alappuzha-Ambalappuzha line doubling project is anticipated to deliver immediate operational advantages.
This 12.66-kilometre stretch is part of the busy Ernakulam-Thuravoor-Kayamkulam route, where a single-line section has long hindered efficient train movement.
An allocation of Rs 324.16 crore has been approved for this venture.
Once completed, the doubling of the line will facilitate the addition of nine extra passenger train services daily in both directions.
Railway authorities also foresee a notable enhancement in punctuality and operational flexibility on one of the state's most frequented coastal rail corridors.
While the details of the Palakkad Town-Parali bypass line are still being finalized, it is expected to alleviate congestion in the Palakkad area, a crucial junction linking Kerala with Tamil Nadu and beyond.
This bypass line is likely to streamline train operations and minimize delays at the Palakkad Town station.
However, this approval arrives at a time when the Pinarayi Vijayan administration and Metroman E. Sreedharan are focusing on two separate high-speed rail initiatives for the state, both of which were not mentioned in the Union budget.
With Assembly elections approaching, CM Vijayan may highlight the narrative that the Centre is neglecting Kerala, and it will be interesting to see if Gopi’s praise for these two railway projects stirs any significant reactions.
