Government Urges City Gas Firms to Focus on PNG Connections for Businesses
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 21 (NationPress) In light of the escalating crisis in West Asia, which is impacting global supply chains, the government has urged city gas distribution (CGD) companies to focus on providing PNG connections for commercial entities like hotels, restaurants, and canteens.
Among the CGD companies are IGL, MGL, GAIL Gas, and BPCL, which are currently offering incentives. The PNGRB has instructed them to reduce the time between application submission and the initiation of gas supply to households while also promoting mass awareness.
The government has called on states and Union Territories (UTs) to hasten the approval process for CGD expansion.
Additionally, the Centre has proposed an extra 10 percent allocation of commercial LPG to states, contingent on their assistance in transitioning from LPG to PNG in the long term.
The Petroleum Ministry has emphasized that it is now up to the states and UTs to advance these reforms and ensure the growth of the CGD network while speeding up the connection issuance for both domestic and commercial/industrial PNG users.
Recently, over 13,700 new PNG connections have been established, with more than 7,300 consumers transitioning from LPG to PNG, alleviating some of the pressure on LPG demand.
While LPG supply remains a concern due to the ongoing geopolitical situation, there have been no reports of shortages at distribution centers.
Interestingly, panic bookings have significantly decreased—from 89 lakh on March 13 to about 55 lakh on March 20—while domestic LPG deliveries continue smoothly.
Approximately 18 states and UTs have issued orders for the allocation of non-domestic LPG, ensuring supply across all regions. Educational institutions and hospitals are being prioritized, receiving about 50 percent of commercial LPG allocations.
In the past week, around 11,360 MT of commercial LPG has been uplifted, according to government reports. Priority sectors continue to receive guaranteed supplies, including 100 percent supply to domestic PNG and CNG transport.
