PNG connections cross 10.86 lakh since March 2026, govt says
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas on Monday, 25 May 2026 said approximately 7.99 lakh piped natural gas (PNG) connections have been gasified since March 2026, with infrastructure readied for an additional 2.87 lakh connections, bringing the total to 10.86 lakh PNG connections nationwide. The update was shared at a media briefing at the National Media Centre, New Delhi, as the government continued monitoring the situation in West Asia and its potential impact on domestic energy security.
Key Developments
The ministry confirmed that around 8.27 lakh customers have been registered for new PNG connections, signalling a strong pipeline of demand. Domestic PNG consumers and CNG transport users are currently receiving 100 per cent gas supplies on a priority basis, the government said. Gas supply to industrial and commercial sectors through city gas distribution (CGD) networks has been enhanced to 80 per cent.
Reducing Dependence on Commercial LPG
To ease reliance on commercial LPG, CGD entities have been directed to prioritise PNG connections for commercial establishments — including hotels, restaurants, and canteens — across all geographical areas. The Centre has also instructed states, Union Territories, and central ministries to expedite approvals needed for CGD infrastructure expansion. Notably, 22 states and Union Territories are already receiving additional commercial LPG allocation linked to the PNG expansion reforms.
Policy and Incentive Framework
The government had earlier offered an additional 10 per cent commercial LPG allocation to states willing to support the long-term transition from LPG to PNG. In a significant policy step, the government notified the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026 under the Essential Commodities Act on 24 March 2026. The order establishes a streamlined, time-bound framework for laying and expanding pipelines across the country, specifically targeting delays related to approvals and land access.
What This Means for Energy Security
The accelerated PNG rollout comes against the backdrop of heightened scrutiny of India's fuel supply chains, given ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Piped natural gas is considered a cleaner and more cost-efficient alternative to LPG for both households and commercial users. This is among the most significant phases of CGD network expansion since the sector was liberalised, and the pace of connections added since March 2026 reflects both policy pressure and on-ground execution. The government's next steps will likely focus on converting the 8.27 lakh registered customers into active connections.
