This prestigious accolade underlines the global importance of Maratha history. Shekhawat made these remarks during the ‘Kartavya Poorti’ (Fulfilment of Duty) event held on Friday to celebrate this UNESCO honor.
In attendance were Ashish Shelar, Maharashtra’s Minister for Cultural Affairs, Vikas Kharge, Additional Chief Secretary of the Cultural Department, Tejas Garge from the Archaeology Department, and Swati Mhase from Goregaon Film City.
Union Minister Shekhawat stressed the need to preserve India’s rich cultural heritage and the increasing international acknowledgment it is receiving.
He highlighted the lasting legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, stating that UNESCO’s recognition of Maharashtra’s priceless heritage is a victory for the cultural identity of the nation. He expressed his sincere gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his crucial role in this accomplishment.
Maharashtra Culture Minister Ashish Shelar described this as a significant moment for the state. He noted that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj dedicated his life to the welfare of his people. These forts are not merely symbols of warfare but also serve as inspirations for public welfare. He commended the officials involved in the recognition process.
Shelar confirmed that the government will ensure the integrity, cleanliness, and beautification of these and other forts. Where the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is concerned, it will take the lead, while the State Archaeology Department will manage the preservation of these forts. However, he emphasized that every citizen and follower of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj has a role in safeguarding these 12 forts.
The collective inclusion of these 12 forts in the UNESCO heritage list is a historic milestone. It signifies the success of India’s unified efforts on the global stage. Minister Shelar called it a landmark moment that heralds a cultural renaissance, while also bringing increased responsibility for preservation, management, and tourism development.
Additional Chief Secretary Vikas Kharge echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the heightened collective responsibility for safeguarding these forts. He encouraged visitors and devotees of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj throughout Maharashtra to explore and honor all 12 of these historical forts, participating in the preservation of their legacy.
During this event, a coffee table book was launched by the dignitaries, and a traditional Marathi ‘powada’ about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was performed by folk artist Praveen Phanse.
