New Delhi, July 19 (NationPress) As India prepares for a crucial Test match against England in Manchester, batsman Ajinkya Rahane has suggested that if Jasprit Bumrah is rested, Arshdeep Singh should be given his Test debut. Currently, England leads the five-match Test series 2-1, having narrowly defeated India by 22 runs in the Lord's Test.
To manage Bumrah's workload effectively, it was agreed that he would only play three Tests on this tour. Having already participated in matches in Leeds and London, his availability for the Old Trafford game is questionable.
“Absolutely. If Bumrah is unavailable, I believe Arshdeep is the right choice. In England, a left-arm seamer capable of swinging the ball both ways is essential. Additionally, he could create rough patches for the spinners with a different angle,” Rahane stated on his YouTube channel.
Although Arshdeep has not yet made his Test debut, he has played in 21 first-class matches, taking 66 wickets. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session in Beckenham prior to the fourth Test.
India’s assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, provided insights, explaining that Arshdeep received a cut while trying to stop the ball during practice.
“He attempted to field the ball and sustained a cut. We will assess the severity of the injury. The medical team is taking him to see a doctor, and if stitches are required, this will impact our strategy for the upcoming days,” ten Doeschate commented to the press.
Bumrah has been exceptional this series, taking 12 wickets across two Tests, including two five-wicket hauls. However, to prevent exacerbating his chronic back issues, the Indian medical staff initially planned for him to participate in only three Tests during this tour.
Given India’s current position in the series, the management may need to reevaluate their strategy and consider including Bumrah in the Manchester Test to potentially level the series.
