How Will South Korean FM Cho Clarify Parliamentary Processes to the US?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Feb 3 (NationPress) South Korea's Foreign Minister Cho Hyun stated on Tuesday that he intends to thoroughly clarify to the United States the parliamentary procedures in South Korea. This comes after US President Donald Trump issued a warning about a potential tariff increase due to delays in Seoul's legislative process concerning a bilateral trade agreement.
Cho's comments were made prior to his departure for Washington, where he is set to meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This meeting aims to alleviate concerns within the Trump administration regarding Seoul's commitment to invest USD 350 billion in the US, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
Trump's warning of increasing the reciprocal tariff on South Korean products from 15% to 25% has raised alarms about the future of the trade agreement. However, Cho emphasized that Trump's statements do not signify the collapse of the deal.
"I will provide a detailed explanation to the US side and seek their understanding that the agreements established between our governments are currently being legislated according to our National Assembly procedures," Cho informed reporters at Incheon International Airport, located to the west of Seoul.
"I plan to convey this same message to the Secretary, other US officials, and particularly to the US Congress," he added.
When asked if the US might leverage the delay in the trade deal to hinder negotiations on enhancing Seoul's uranium enrichment and spent fuel reprocessing capabilities, Cho downplayed such a scenario.
"I will ensure that we arrive at a favorable conclusion with Secretary Rubio, working towards a prompt implementation of the joint fact sheet," Cho remarked, referring to the document from the summit that outlines the trade, security, and other agreements.
Cho is traveling to Washington to participate in a US-led ministerial meeting with like-minded countries regarding critical minerals supply chains, scheduled for Wednesday (local time).
