Seoul, Dec 7 (NationPress) A special counsel team has indicted Representative Choo Kyung-ho, the former floor leader of the People Power Party (PPP), on charges linked to the martial law attempt by ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol last December.
The investigation led by special counsel Cho Eun-suk revealed that Choo was indicted without being taken into custody, facing allegations of obstructing fellow lawmakers from voting on lifting the martial law decree that was issued on December 3 of the previous year.
The counsel had requested an arrest warrant for Choo; however, a Seoul court rejected this request last week, citing disputes regarding the case's facts and insufficient justification for his arrest, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
Choo, who was once a close ally of Yoon, is accused of intentionally altering the location of an emergency party meeting on the night of December 3 at Yoon's behest. The PPP was the ruling party during Yoon's presidency.
These venue changes resulted in only 18 of the PPP's 108 lawmakers participating in the parliamentary vote to revoke Yoon's decree, which subsequently passed unanimously among the 190 lawmakers present the next morning.
In response, Choo criticized the indictment as “unwarranted”, asserting that the allegations were fabricated and that he had not received any martial law-related requests from Yoon.
He stated, “The special counsel moved forward with its politically motivated indictment without additional evidence, even after its request for an arrest warrant was denied due to lack of substantiation.”
In late November, the National Assembly approved a motion for Choo's arrest. Under current law, sitting lawmakers enjoy immunity from arrest while the Parliament is in session and can only be arrested with Assembly consent.
Simultaneously, the special counsel team also indicted former Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn without physical detention on charges of inciting an insurrection in connection with Yoon's martial law decree. He faces additional charges of special obstruction of public duty.
Hwang, who served under former President Park Geun-hye, posted messages on Facebook following Yoon's brief martial law declaration, calling for the removal of pro-North Korea elements and those allegedly involved in electoral fraud.
He also demanded the arrest of National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik and then-PPP leader Han Dong-hoon.
A court similarly dismissed an arrest warrant for Hwang last month, citing inadequate rationale for the necessity of his arrest.
