Seoul, Sep 2 (NationPress) On Tuesday, a special counsel team from South Korea executed raids at the residences and offices of Rep. Choo Kyung-ho, a prominent member of the opposition People Power Party (PPP). This action stems from his suspected role in the failed martial law attempt by former President Yoon Suk Yeol back in December, during his tenure as the party's floor leader.
The investigation, led by special counsel Cho Eun-suk, focused on Choo's properties in Seoul and Daegu, his constituency. Allegations suggest that Choo hindered his party's lawmakers from participating in a crucial parliamentary vote aimed at revoking the martial law decree.
Investigators are examining claims that Choo altered the location of an emergency general meeting for the PPP multiple times on the night of Yoon's declaration on December 3, reportedly at the former president's behest.
As a result of these venue changes, numerous PPP lawmakers were unable to take part in the vote, leading the National Assembly to pass a motion to repeal Yoon's decree the following morning, with only 18 of the PPP's 108 lawmakers present.
Records show that Choo contacted Yoon shortly after the declaration. He first spoke with Hong Chul-ho, a senior aide, and later with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo before reaching out to Yoon.
“We have conducted inquiries regarding the discussions between Han and Choo,” assistant special counsel Park Ji-young stated during a briefing. “Further questioning is essential to verify the facts.”
The raids also extended to the offices of the PPP's floor leader and Rep. Cho Ji-yeon, who was present with Choo during the parliamentary vote.
Choo's representatives assert that he had no prior knowledge of Yoon's martial law declaration and did not discuss obstructing lawmakers from voting with him, according to reports from Yonhap news agency.
Regarding the venue changes for the emergency meeting, Choo's team attributed the situation to misunderstandings with the party leadership and accessibility issues at the National Assembly, where martial law personnel were deployed.
Cho’s team is anticipated to summon Choo soon for further questioning regarding these allegations.
