Kolkata, July 20 (NationPress) Former state Congress president of West Bengal and five-time Lok Sabha member Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury addressed a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, voicing his concerns regarding the alleged harassment, humiliation, and physical abuse faced by Bengali-speaking migrant workers in the BJP-ruled states of Odisha and Maharashtra.
Chowdhury's correspondence arrives concurrently with a vigorous campaign initiated by the Trinamool Congress and Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, against the BJP concerning this issue.
Within the letter, the former Congress state head highlighted reported incidents where Bengali-speaking migrant workers were unjustly targeted due to their linguistic identity, often being confused with Bangladeshi nationals.
In his plea, Chowdhury urged the Prime Minister to instruct various Union ministries, including Home Affairs and Labour & Employment, to safeguard the fundamental rights and dignity of these inter-state migrant laborers.
“In light of the targeted harassment, humiliation, and torture that the innocent Bengali-speaking laborers in Odisha, Maharashtra, and other states are enduring, I sincerely request your intervention to protect these vulnerable individuals from their current plight,” Chowdhury's letter to the Prime Minister stated.
He emphasized the substantial contributions made by Bengali-speaking migrant workers from West Bengal to the revenue of these states.
Furthermore, he condemned the unfair treatment of these workers solely based on their physical resemblance and the linguistic similarities to Bangladeshis.
