Itanagar, Aug 9 (NationPress) Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai touched down in Itanagar on Saturday for a two-day visit to Arunachal Pradesh. He is set to officially open the newly-built, cutting-edge court building of the Gauhati High Court's Itanagar permanent bench on Sunday, as confirmed by officials.
Upon his arrival at Raj Bhavan in Itanagar, the CJI was honored with a ceremonial guard of honor from the Arunachal Pradesh Police, headed by Inspector Jumken Riram.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu warmly welcomed the Chief Justice on behalf of the people of Arunachal Pradesh, presenting him with a traditional 'khada' symbolizing respect and goodwill, according to a Raj Bhavan official.
Commissioner to the Governor, Pawan Kumar Sain, greeted him on behalf of Governor Lt. General K.T. Parnaik (Retd.), who is currently on an official engagement outside the state.
Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, alongside the state’s Minister of Law, Legislative and Justice, Advocate Kento Jini, were also in attendance. The Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, Justice Ashutosh Kumar, and Union Minister of State for Law & Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Arjun Ram Meghwal, accompanied the CJI.
Kento Jini emphasized that the establishment of the building for the permanent bench of the Gauhati High Court would greatly enhance the justice delivery system in Arunachal Pradesh. It aims to provide faster justice, improved accessibility, transparency, and efficiency for the residents of the state.
The new high court building spans a built area of 21,208.86 sq m, constructed by the PWD at an estimated cost of Rs 135 crore. Chief Minister Pema Khandu laid the foundation stone on August 12, 2018, with construction commencing on February 25, 2021.
The Itanagar Permanent Bench of the Gauhati High Court has been operational for 25 years, inaugurated by the former Chief Justice of India, Justice A S Anand, on August 12, 2000.
