CJP protest triggers train cancellations, strands passengers across India
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest on Saturday, 9 October 2026 triggered widespread train cancellations and rescheduling across the Indian Railways network, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded at major stations including New Delhi, Jammu, and Kanpur. Commuters voiced sharp frustration over the disruption, holding the agitation responsible for upending travel plans across the country.
Chaos at Stations
At the Jammu railway station, a stranded commuter described scenes of widespread confusion. 'Look at how much chaos has been created here. People are facing difficulties, and everyone is stranded. Those who need to reach their respective destinations are stuck here,' the traveller said. Similar scenes played out at the New Delhi railway station, where a passenger lamented: 'Common people are suffering because of the protest. There are traffic jams, metros, and trains are being shut down. This is not right.'
A passenger travelling from Gurugram to New Delhi was forced to reroute using navigation apps after the regular route showed severe congestion. 'I took an alternative route based on Google Maps while travelling from Gurugram to the New Delhi station as the regular route was showing heavy traffic,' the commuter said.
Scale of the Disruption
A youngster at one of the affected stations noted that all trains had been cancelled between 4 am and 2 pm, with several services diverted or cancelled even before that window. 'I just saw the news that all trains are cancelled from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow, and even today, many trains have been diverted or cancelled. This is having a major impact on the daily lives of people in India,' he said. He flagged the cascading effect on students and working professionals, adding that already-scarce Tatkal and regular ticket availability made the cancellations particularly damaging. 'Someone has to be held accountable for this,' he stressed.
At Kanpur railway station, a passenger headed to Delhi said he was forced to break his journey into multiple legs. 'Now I have to break up my journey and travel in parts. I will first take a bus to travel 50-60 km and then take the next available train from the railway station there,' he said, calling it 'extremely inconvenient.'
Political Allegations Against CJP
Beyond logistical complaints, some passengers directed political criticism at the CJP itself. A woman at the New Delhi station alleged that the party was attempting to establish a political base similar to the early trajectory of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and claimed the protest was being backed by external forces. 'CJP is trying to establish its political base, just as the Aam Aadmi Party did when it first came...I believe some external party is supporting them, who want to destabilise and divide the country,' she alleged. These remain personal claims by passengers and have not been independently verified.
Broader Impact on Daily Life
The disruption has highlighted a recurring tension between the right to protest and the operational continuity of public infrastructure. India's railway network carries over 2 crore passengers daily, and large-scale cancellations during politically motivated shutdowns have drawn repeated public criticism in recent years. This is not the first instance of train services being curtailed ahead of a major protest in the capital region. The Indian Railways has not issued a public statement on the extent of cancellations or a timeline for full restoration of services.
With services expected to resume fully after 2 pm on the day of the protest, affected passengers are being advised to check updated schedules before proceeding to stations.
